Historic Royal Palaces: annual review and editorial strategy

Project overview
Historic Royal Palaces came to Writing Club to create its first annual review since 2019. The brief was to take a fresh approach: show the breadth of the organisation’s work and the impact it has, from conservation and biodiversity to accessibility and visitor experience.
Written primarily for internal stakeholders, the review would also be published online for anyone to read.
As a senior freelancer for Writing Club, I worked closely with HRP’s strategist and teams across the organisation to shape, research and write two annual reviews.

My role covered the full editorial process, from reviewing potential case studies and proposing the structure to arranging interviews, writing the copy and working through edits with HRP. Alongside the reviews, I helped refine the messaging around HRP’s new strategy and wrote a short video script to share the highlights with staff.

To capture the voices of the people who make HRP what it is, I arranged and conducted interviews across departments, from the CEO to the accessibility team. Conversations took place in person and over Zoom, giving me the detail, perspectives and personal stories behind the work.
I also visited the Tower of London, Kensington Palace and Hampton Court Palace to meet staff and see their work first-hand. Spending time at the sites helped me understand the projects in context and bring the people doing the work into the reviews.

I wrote the full copy for both reviews, using the agreed structure, selected case studies and material from staff interviews. I organised the content, wrote each section and edited the copy for continuity and a consistent tone of voice.
I then worked through the drafts with HRP, making changes and refining the copy in response to their feedback.
-
For the 2024/25 review, I worked with HRP’s strategist to refine the messaging around the organisation’s new strategy. I helped adapt the wording for a wider audience, explaining HRP’s plans in clear, public-facing language.

I selected the main points and standout stories from the full review and wrote a script for a short video for HRP staff. The script was designed to give staff a quick overview of the year’s work and help them share the organisation’s impact.
